What is ‘liminal’?
A friend asked me recently how I was doing, and if I was still living a ‘liminal life’. It seemed an ideal question for someone who was living a trans-continental life, with my friends and clients, work and home on 2 disperate continents, and maintaining a constant sense of being deeply connected to both places. ‘Currently, my energetic field might best described as: hovering over the mid-atlantic near Iceland!’ I jokily replied, whilst carefully mindful of my grounding needs in that moment.
Liminal is defined by The Cambridge Dictionary as:
“liminal (adjective)
between or belonging to two different places, states, etc.:
the liminal state between waking and sleeping”
In so many ways, the nature of this word is an on-going lesson to learn how to be liminal, a process of being, not that of simply reaching a single destination in itself.
As a Western Medical Herbalist, my work is to be liminal between the dominant medical culture and that of the traditional healing modalities.
As an Intuitive coach, my work is to be liminal between the pragmatic and the mystical.
As a Clinicial Hypnotherapist, my work is to be liminal between the spoken and the unspoken states of consciousness.
My world is laden with the varied doorways and thresholds upon which I linger, allowing a philosophical lightness of touch between the different liminal states on my personal and professional journey of hireth, ‘the longing for home, the place never yet known’. I suspect my heart may always be, in part, liminal and my head settling into this state.
